Region
Arneis is most commonly found in the sandy hills of Roero within the Piedmont region, because the soils help give it more acidity and structure. For centuries Arneis was used in blending to soften the tannins and harshness of Nebbiolo found in the Barolo region, which gave it the name “Nebbiolo blanco”. Within the vineyard it was planted so that birds would be more attracted to these fragrant grapes and ignore the more valuable Nebbiolo clusters.
Variety
Arneis means “little rascal” because this grape can be slightly difficult to grow. It produces dry white wines with aromas of citrus fruit, pear and apricot.
Tasting Notes
White flowers, meyer lemon, pear, grapefruit, Golden Delicious apple.
Food Pairings
I would pair this wine with a salad with pear and gorgonzola cheese. The acid and texture would cut through the richness of the cheese and the fruit and greens will play off the fruity aromatics of the wine.
If You Like This Wine, You May Also Like…
Arneis is similar to Sauvignon Blanc with all of the aromatics and much more texture/backbone. Verdicchio would also be a great shout, a native varietal to the Marche in central Italy with high acid and flavours of green fruit.
Why We Like It
We are huge fans of texture with wine, full stop, it’s usually what we evaluate first. The mouthfeel and rich weight of the Arneis contrasts beautifully with the bright, citrusy aromatics and flavours.
