Clos du Soleil

Winemaker’s Series

Clos du Soleil

Syrah 97%, Viognier 3%

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, Canada

The Similkameen Valley has tall surrounding mountains, and the reflectivity of the rock, heat remains in the valley long after the sun sets. The valley is arid with persistent winds that can reduce the moisture in the vines and the soil. Even above ground irrigation can evaporate before touching the ground. The wind does minimise mildew, so vineyards generally don’t require frequent spraying.

Syrah is a wine grape that actually does well in both hotter climates and cooler climates. So, for a place with really hot growing seasons like the Similkameen Valley, Syrah is a great choice.

Syrah from warmer climates is also a good wine for those who like Cabernet Sauvignon and want to find other wines that are like Cabernet.

Clos du Soleil is a small artisan winery and estate vineyard on the Upper Bench of the South Similkameen Valley, in British Columbia, Canada. They are known for Bordeaux blends. With the Winemaker’s series they are trying to make non-traditional Clos du soleil styles. Something different. Clos du Sloleil is part owned by Bonnie Henry.

The ideal temperature range to serve Syrah/Shiraz is 16–18°C, which can be achieved with 15 minutes in the refrigerator!

The Nose

Immediately the perfumed nose of this wine envelops the taster with aromas of freshly crushed raspberries, plums and violets, complemented with subtle notes of baking spice and sagebrush.

Tasting Notes

On the palate the flavours are rich, complex and layered: wild raspberries and dark forest fruit, accented with black currants and chocolate, and notes of spice. With a full mouthfeel structured on a backdrop of stony tannins.

Food Pairings

A beautiful grilled rib-eye, roasted lamb, anything grilled or braised red meat.

Why We Like It

This wine smells and tastes like Syrah! The small amount of viognier softens the wine, adds a lovely floral and aromatic aspect to the nose. I’d love to have a bottle of the 2017 and 2020 side by side and do a taste test to see the similarities and differences. This wine was just bottled and it's already showing wonderfully. Go ahead and rest it and open it up years later.
