Region
Piedmont is home to “king of grapes” Nebbiolo and its different expressions (Barolo, Barbaresco). Cuisine wise, we see lots of truffle, mushroom and heartier pastas and risottos due to proximity to the alps.
Variety
Brachetto is a grape variety grown primarily in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. It produces light bodied, highly aromatic red wines.
Tasting Notes
Ripe strawberry, candied cherry, cranberry juice, crushed violets and rose.
Food Pairings
I’d pair this with cacio e pepe or a caprese salad.
If You Like This Wine, You May Also Like…
Cru Beaujolais would be a fantastic shout, especially a lighter, more floral expression like Fleurie bursting with red fruit. Pelaverga would also be a fun one to try, indigenous to Piedmont as well and full of strawberry and white pepper.
Why We Like It
Italy is home to something like 2,000 native varietals. We love discovering grapes that we’ve never heard of before. If producers don’t continue to work with them, we could lose them to extinction. We love a light red in general but especially transitioning into winter! The aromatics on the Brachetto are wonderful.
