The famous wines of the Langhe are Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG which are highly sought after by collectors for their quality and ability to age. In a similar situation as in Montepulciano, winemakers were looking for more flexibility than the strict Barolo and Barbaresco rules allowed. In general the Langhe Nebbiollo DOC wines still share much of the full bodied character and structure of their DOCG counterparts. They also have similar floral aromas and subtle notes of red cherry, but may lack the complexity and depth of a Barolo or Barbaresco.
Variety
Nebbiolo wines are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as "tar and roses". They produce wines that are lighter in colour that can lose even more colour as they age, but don’t be fooled by the colour. Nebiollo produces rich full-bodied wines.
Producer
This small estate is in the heart of the Langhe and is surrounded by the key villages of Monforte d’Alba, Barolo and Novello. This is the family’s 4th generation to dedicate themselves to all aspects of producing their wines from vine to bottle.
Serving
Although a Bordeaux glass will be more than sufficient, I would suggest using a Burgundy glass. The wider bowl enhances the more delicate peripheral aromas and flavours of Nebiollo. Once again, decant and serve slightly chilled.
The Nose
Beyond the initial sour wild cherry the wine provides notes of liquorice and exotic spice.
Tasting Notes
Wild berries, dates and black cherries are encased in a beautiful structure of excellent acidity and soft tannin. Very well balanced and has a long pulpy finish.
Food Pairings
Restaurant: Ask for Luigi’s house made pastas are always served al dente with just the right amount of bite. Choose the mouth-watering wild boar ragu and campanelle pasta to accompany this Nebiollo.
