Region

Pfalz is a key wine producing region in western Germany. A continuation of Alsace, it's flat they call them “flat land people” Much warmer than the rest of Germany, where you can grow a lot of varietals that aren’t usually grown there. They call it the German Tuscany, hence the name “Villa” in the title. A region that isn’t known for quality as they used to do mass production and drink all day and mix their wine with water. Almost all of the wine worth drinking stays there and isn’t exported which lends further to the reputation of the wine from that region

Fun Fact: Germany is the third largest producer of Pinot Noir in the world!

Variety

Pinot noir is a red wine variety as well as the name refers to wines made predominantly from Pinot Noir grapes. Pinot noir is grown all around the world and performs best in cooler climates. Pinot noir can be used to make everything from red wine, to Champagne, White wines as well as rosé. Pinot noir can be a difficult varietal to cultivate as it is susceptible to rot, it also has thin skins which depending on region and climate of the vintage can easily be swayed.

Producer

Ernst or ‘Ernie’ as they call him at the vineyard is the current owner and winemaker at Dr. Loosen. Where they are very very well known for their Rieslings. Ernst is a pinot lover and wanted to have a pinot project but couldn't afford burgundy so he stayed home in his beloved land of Pfalz.

Serving

With water and ice; just kidding. I would serve it at 16 degrees as it is a delicate pinot.

The Nose

On the nose it's floral with fresh strawberries and raspberries. A pleasing aroma of cherry, cola, strawberry, cranberry, red licorice and a little oaky spice.

Tasting Notes

Its dark cherry fruit is juicy, ripe, and forward, with a spicy mid-palate. Twelve months of ageing in used barriques gives the wine a smoky depth and a nice touch of earthy tannins.

Food Pairings

A juicy thanksgiving turkey.

If you are a pinot lover and want an everyday wine then this is it. The region produces amazing wines but isn’t known for it, so get get a great wine that is undervalued and drinking wildly well.
