Maison Jean Loron
G.S.M (Grenache, Shiraz/Syrah, Mourvedre)
Rhone Valley, France
The Rhone Valley in Southeastern France produces some of the most sought after and expensive wines in the world, but it is still a great area to explore for consistently delicious full bodied red wines at a great price. The Jean Loron Cote du Rhone is produced in the more consistent weather of the southern part of this appellation thats climate is influenced by the Mediterranean Sea.
This wine can be a blend of up to 21 different varietals, but is always dominated by Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre (GSM). A factor that contributes to this region's consistency is the winemaker's ability to make adjustments to the amounts of each varietal used. Grenache almost always dominates the blend, particularly in the southern half of the Valley, with its rich berry flavors. Syrah contributes structure and spicy notes, while Mourvèdre brings its dark, chocolatey notes and intense color.
This is one of the few estates that Jean Loron keeps outside of Burgundy where the family began making wine over 200 years ago.
Chill down the wine slightly and use a Bordeaux glass. The larger size of the glass allows the fruit bouquet to develop. It smooths out rough edges, plays down tannins, and allows the wines to achieve balance.
This wine is packed with aromas of chocolate, cherries, and sweet spice.
All the berries, such as raspberries, cherries, and currants. The tannic structure is smooth and the wine has a pleasantly long finish.
Restaurant: Pourhouse was already famous for its burgers made from dry aged beef, but recently we have added some new burgers to the roster. My new favourite is The Queen made with brisket and chuck, then topped with an onion ring, peppered bacon, aged cheddar, lettuce, tomato jam, mayo on a sesame seed bun. This pairing will squash the notion of ordering a beer with your burger.
Home: Ribeye pan sear it with garlic and butter.
